IWEF MEETING ON
STRUCTURAL DAMPING

The Meeting on Structural Damping will be held in Atsugi, Japan on
September 8, 1995. The Meeting is organized by the International Wind
Engineering Forum (IWEF), and cosponsored by the Kanagawa Academy of
Science and Technology, the Japan Association for Wind Engineering, the
Architectural Institute of Japan, the Japan Society of Civil Engineers and
the Building Center of Japan.
This will be an exciting opportunity to discuss the most important, yet
most uncertain, parameter affecting dynamic response of buildings and
structures. Uncertainty of damping significantly reduces the reliability
of structural design. Although research on vibration control devices has
been gaining momentum, the inherent damping of buildings and structures
has attracted less attention. Accurate determination of structural damping
is very important, not only for structural design analysis, but also for
design of active/passive auxiliary damping devices.
The goals of the Meeting are:
- exchange information on damping: structural, foundation, aerodynamic etc
- discuss methods of evaluating damping from full-scale data for existing buildings and structures
- explore nonlinear effects
- discuss appropriate design values for structural damping of buildings and structures
The Meeting will bring together professionals representing: wind,
earthquake and structural engineering, vibration control and others.

PUBLICATIONS
The Meeting Preprints will be available at the registration desk. The Proceedings, including the presented papers and discussions as well as additional invited papers, will be published after the Meeting by Elsevier Science Publishers.

REGISTRATION FEE
No registration fee will be charged to the participants who do not wish to receive the Preprints and the Proceedings. The Preprints will be available during the registration at a cost of 9,000 yen (US\$ 100). The cost will be of a set consisting of the Preprints and the Proceedings.
